Bowling Green - Revisited
Sep 15th, 2012 at 10:13pm
Print Post
It was Sunday, Labor Day Weekend, 2012.
Scott, Ryan and I had been driving around Wake County all
day checking out some of the new little developments that
have been springing up lately around the Triangle. Basically,
it amounted to a good chance to show Ryan around, not
that there was much to look at.
"Right here under these nice new townhomes we found some
really nice crystals!", and that sort of thing.
Anyway, after dropping Ryan off, Scott and I decided to hit
one more new spot on the way home. We didn't find anything
at that site, either, but that put us driving back into town
on Hwy 98. So we got to thinking, since we had struck out
all day, there wouldn't be any harm swinging by BG and
taking a look see. They had recently opened up a couple of
the last few remaining lots to be opened. They had already
started building a house on one of the lots, but the other
one was still scraped and barren of construction.

It was easy to find an exposed vein of the green altered
granite of Bowling "Green" that the crystallized veins of
quartz are running through. So we started to dig.
In no time we were seeing little pockets and seams of
crystallizing quartz. This was not a surprise for this site.
The deeper we went, the better it was looking.........
so we decided to dig some more. Smiley

Here's a few shots of Scott in the our hole as it was about
an hour into digging.

And here are a couple pics of the crystal plates that we
pulled out. I'll save the close-ups for Scott, so these are
more just to show how much material we were pulling out as
we chased the veins.
Most of the crystals are milky to cloudy, but there are some
very interesting habits to observe. The first pic is of our
"pile" next to the hole, and the second pic is after soaking
in Iron Out.

Now the plates of regular old quartz crystals are nice,
and very interesting,
but we've seen a lot of them.
Every once in a while, the veins will pop into some of these,
and these are what we're really looking for. Cheesy

22 x 9 x 5 cm

This plate of clear to milky quartz contained a nice grouping of amethyst.  There was slight damage to the specimen although not created by Joe and I.  Our first sign we were on the right track was loose amethyst crystals.  We slowed down well before having the opportunity to stick our tools where the amethyst plate was.  The plate and amethyst crystals were angled downward and out of reach from our tools.  I believe it was either contact damage or the result of the blasting that took place initially as this subdivision was being developed.

After the two downpours we've had in the last week it ought
to be pretty good hunting at either place, Dan.
We left quite a few plates and pieces behind at BG. Smiley

Nice pics of your Labor Day Dig.  Love the contrast of the Amethyst to the white quartz.  Plus the before and cleaned pics are great. Smiley Cheesy Smiley

I went out to the Durham site and picked up some nice pet wood.  Not as colorful as some from out west but very neat to find local stuff.  I will try to hit Bowling Green later.  If you folks save me some. Wink

Yeah! Good for ya'll! It is always inspiring to see prospecting pay off, especially on an individual level. Very cool. And bonus, the stuff is pretty!  Grin
